Research your competition. Find out who is doing the same thing in your area. Determine what they are making from an area that you could cover and try to figure out what it is that can make your business better or more attractive to potential customers. Adding small services to your Daily walk or spending that little bit of extra time might be all you need. It also might be the
convenience of the person knowing your in the same neighborhood that gives you that little edge. |

Legal Operation. Look into your local business laws to find out what it is you need to do to operate legally. Check on Business and Occupational Licenses. If you notice there are a lot of Pet sitters and Walkers advertising that they are Licensed Bonded and Insured. Here is what each of those statements mean.
Licensed - Licensed means that they are Licensed to do business in the City, County or State where they operate. There are no State regulations on Pet Sitting so being Licensed by the state to specifically walk dogs is not altogether a true statement. Stating that your licensed does not emply that you have went through any training of taken any board certification to Watch or Walk Pets.
Bonded - Bonding Means that you are protected if one of your employees commits a Criminal Act and they are caught and convicted. You are protected (or covered) for protection under certain laws from lawsuits arising from the actions of YOUR employee. This does not provide you with insurance and does not offer protection or payment unless YOUR employee is convicted of a crime.
Insured - Insured is the most important aspect of all of these statements. Being insured means you have general liability insurance and you are covered for general things that could go wrong like loss of keys, loss or injury of a pet in your care, and other accidental problems or incidents. Be sure that your coverage covers Property damage OTHER THEN YOUR OWN. This will aide in covering things that happen to a clients house or property while your there visiting your pet.
Puting all of these items together can let you rest assured that you are operating legally and safely no matter what happens. |

Advertise. Make flyers and hand them out around your neighborhood, some neighborhoods prohibit this so be mindful of where you do this. Handing them out in and around apartment complexes are good (if they accept pets) if they allow it. If not take a professional looking brochure to main apartment leasing office and ask if you can have one placed in the welcome packages.
Take some to nearby Veterinary Clinics and ask nicely to place a business card or flyer near their entrance. Take a Flyer or two to your local grocery store and place it on their community bulletin board.
Word Of Mouth. This is by far the most effective advertising you can get. Get One Job DO A GREAT job at it and other people will hear about it. Tell all of your friends and all of your other co-workers and they may know someone looking or may hear of someone that needs a good reliable pet walker and your in.
